Then came freedom. Reborn, Romero adopted the name “Freedom” and began writing songs that addressed not only the barriers he saw in the world he left behind in prison, but also the metaphorical walls he continued to see in the world outside. He also felt a need to use his newfound insight to speak to others Perhaps most importantly, however, he wanted to write songs about how he could tear those same walls down. Songs like the reggae-inflected “Liberty,” the hopeful yet poignant singer/songwriter pop of “Sad, Sad Word,” the tongue-in-check, no-frills honesty of the blues shuffle “U Think U Got Me Hooked,” and the intimate connections spawned by the love ballad “You Need Me,” all speak to his ambassadorial-like mission of unifying our souls through his music.
